Decentralized storage technology is being considered as a future of data storage and it appears that the future is not too far, now. Even, several industry leaders have started betting on its success. This technology has emerged out as a disruptor to traditional cloud storage.

Let’s first understand, What is Decentralized Storage?

A decentralized storage system is a technology that allows users to store their data in multiple locations or servers. This whole process of sharing and storing data is called sharding.

It is to be noted that unlike a centralized storage server, which is operated by a company or organization, a decentralized storage server is hosted by people. These individuals hosting the servers are bound by smart contracts — a defining feature of blockchain — that keep them honest and prevent them from snooping in or tampering with the data stored in their servers.

Why Decentralized Storage System?

Here are a few reasons to choose a decentralized storage system:

  1. Data Is More Secure- The traditional centralized system gives the hosts a great deal of power in that they can potentially eavesdrop on data being stored and even disclose them to third parties. This model is also vulnerable to cyberattacks which could lead to data breaches and complete loss. In this situation, a decentralized storage system is considered to be the best option, as this technology stores data in different nodes as fragments. If a system is upgraded to a decentralized network, then it becomes nearly impossible to breach data or disclose them to others.
  2. Minimized file loss- Presently, there are thousands of nodes available around the world, and in the near future, a million others will also arrive. This ensures redundancy in which multiple copies of each data fragment are stored on different nodes. This means every single file stored on the network will have countless copies.
  3. Fast Downloading Speed- Traditional data storage models are prone to network bottlenecks during instances of high network traffic. But this does not happen with a decentralized storage network, as it uses peer-to-peer technology, which eliminates the need for a central server.
  4. File Transfers Are Easier- On a decentralized network, the data is stored in multiple locations of a server, therefore, it is not only easier to find a file on the network, but also to transfer them.

Conclusion

With the increasing volume of business data, demand for secure and inexpensive storage systems is also growing in the market. Currently, organizations rely upon the centralized cloud storage system for securing their data. But these cloud storage systems are being criticized for their tendency to force end-users into inflexible and expensive services.

On contrary, a decentralized data storage marketplace provides improved autonomous control over data to the users. Since the technology is comparatively new, it may take a while before it is adopted widely and becomes mainstream.
